Morrison-Knudsen entered the railroad industry in 1971 as a builder of "kit-bashed" locomotives; its base
of operations was a locomotive shop in Boise, Idaho. By establishing subsidiary Motive Power International
in 1989, the company expanded into the buying, selling and/or leasing of locomotives; the days of being
simply a locomotive re-manufacturer had passed. The name of the subsidiary company was changed in 1994
to MK Rail. Another name change occurred two years later, when Wabtec purchased the locomotive supplier.
From that point forward, it became MotivePower Industries. The locomotive manufacturing component of the
business has long been referred to as the Boise Locomotive Works.
This roster includes prototype, test, and demonstrator locomotives produced by Morrison Knudsen, along with its fleet of leased locomotives. A special recognition goes to Norm Anderson, who compiled the M-K / MK Rail rosters for Diesel Era magazine listed below.
